Gracia Ventus, born 1988 in Indonesia, she is the founder and designer of the independent Shanghai based fashion brand, ROSEN. [1]
Gracia has Issey Miyake and Ryuichi Sakamoto as two of her role models, the latter, and his song "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence", is a constant presence as she designs her new collections.[2]
She describes herself as more of a curator of ideas rather than a designer. [3]
Early Life
Ventus was sent to Singapore for education and spent her childhood from the age of 10, living with strangers. Ventus spoke Indonesian in school and Hakka at home. English was seen as a secondary language in school, however, Ventus had an affinity for the language. She grew up reading Stephen King, JRR Tolkien and even Danielle Steele.[4]
She later attended universities in both the United Kingdom and Australia. She currently resides in Shanghai, China. During her university days, she collected and sold vintage garments from her dorm in Melbourne.[5]
Whilst collecting garments, Ventus fell in love with Rick Owens' designs as she could resonate with the rebellion and individuality in his work, which is seemingly reflected in her own designs. [6]
Career
Ventus started her fashion journey by working at a fashion magazine.[7] She created "TheRosenrot" to write about vintage fashion. She later quit her job to finish her degree, whilst continuing to collect vintage pieces.[8] The site was initially meant to support the aforementioned hobby.
Her interest in the fashion industry grew over the years, and she started writing about more fashion related topics such as fashion theory, history, luxury fashion and more sociological topics such as feminism and consumerism.
As she started to branch out into fashion design, her essays shifted focus into garment manufacturing, textile production and how to operate a fashion related business.[9]
ROSEN
The first ever samples of ROSEN were made in 2017, with the first batch focusing on shirts, creating unisex fits mainly fitting Ventus' own specifications. She mentions that the first fit was "A-line flare with exaggerated high collar and extra long sleeves that end with reinforced cuffs. The back is longer than the front, and it has side splits so that I can easily grab things out of my trousers pockets, but mostly so that I can put my hands in them for extra style points when I walk."[10]

Another prototype was a coat, modelled after simple workwear/painter coat made of heavy cotton twill. [11]
The first pieces were made specifically with utilitarian aims as she's constantly on the move. With loose fitted garments being easier to travel around with rather than bags.
ROSEN-X
ROSEN-X is the more technical counterpart, and acts as a diffusion line to the main label, ROSEN.
The first ROSEN-X collection was introduced quite quickly after a previous ROSEN collection. It also introduced one of her favourite set of cargos, the "Europa Cargos" which there were four sample iterations of.
ROSEN-X was Ventus' introduction to more synthetic fabrics in order to create what according to her, is "slightly-more-interesting" clothing.[12][13]
ROSEN-S
ROSEN-S is a diffusion line of ROSEN that was introduced in 2019, it focuses on the present whereas ROSEN is more catered towards the unpredictable future. The line features suitings and everyday wear.[14]
Style
Techniques
Ventus' early work consisted of simple garments with few panels. Whilst working on her latest iteration of her aviator jacket, "Earhart", she made a comparison to the early garments she worked on, which often contained merely 10 panels in her patterns. In comparison, the Earhart consisted of 80 panels.[15]
Themes
Ventus currently owns ROSEN, and it's counterpart, ROSEN-X.
Ventus mentions that she uses ROSEN-X as a way of way of expressing her hidden rage that has propelled her forward since her childhood.[16]
She describes them as "If ROSEN is melancholic hope, ROSEN-X is the aggression needed to destroy the old ways and create a new path forward".[17]
Collections
Ventus has created seven different collections for ROSEN, and its counterpart, ROSEN-X.[18]
