Ellen Hodakova Larsson (born 4 April 1992) is a Swedish fashion designer. She is the founder and owner of the brand Hodakova.

Early Life

Larsson's mother was a seamstress, as well as her grandmother, and her grandmothers father. Tailoring and sewing has always been a part of Larsson's life, but more as a practical option as her mother would craft garments and furniture.[1] Larsson's father is a military man. Her father likes to dress up on special occasions, adhering to traditions.[2] She was raised on a horse farm an hour away from Stockholm[3], and she has described being close to nature has shaped her way of thinking when it comes to her design language and sustainability.[4][5]

Larsson used to paint a lot in her childhood, and her mother encouraged her to pursue a career in art.[6]

Larsson calls her maternal grandmother her "biggest inspiration", and she took her maiden name and put it on a label: Hodakova.[7] Her grandmother escaped Finland during the war, which, naming the brand after her is an embodiment to her strength.[8]

Whilst riding, she became obsessed with having the specific pieces from the specific brands, which shaped her understanding of fashion.[9]

Career

Larsson founded Hodakova in 2021 after graduating from the Swedish School of Textiles.

She would partake in random styling gigs, set design work, and the pivotal DIY video that landed on Vogue Runway. "That video ended up on Vogue Runway and sparked a lot of interest. The belt bag was a turning point—a product between art and fashion that led to meeting investors" she said.[10]

She was awarded 'Designer of the Year' in 2023 at the Elle Gala.[11] Larsson was also awarded the LVMH prize for 'young designer of the year' in 2024, becoming the first Swedish designer to do so. She crafted bespoke garments for Cate Blanchett and Saoirse Ronan in the same year.[12]

Style

Techniques

Her appreciation and respect for the farm life, has given her a unique experience when it comes to circularity. Maintaining that in her work by crafting treasure out of countryside deadstock.[13] Her ability to deconstruct and create garments out of non-clothing objects, such as a dress crafted from landscape oil paintings, makes her techniques unique.[14]During school, I always felt it was hard to work with flat materials, things I couldn’t break or shape,” she says. So Larsson brought the techniques she learned at home into the classroom.[15]

Larsson has fostered relationships with various secondhand companies over the years, which provide her with the materials for each collection. In addition, every season, Hodakova partners with a brand that throws some more specialised pieces into the mix. The autumn/winter 2023 collection, for example, saw Houdini Sportswear provide leftover merchandise, allowing Larsson to create runway-ready dresses from windbreakers.[16]

Themes

Fur berets salvaged from second-hand stores clumped to make cocktail dresses; riding boots were deconstructed and remodelled into mini skirts; and vintage tea towels were refashioned into chic A-line sets were part of her showing in Paris in 2024. Showcasing her circulative mindset.[17]

Her usage of belts can be seen in many of her pieces, using them for styling, but also creating garments such as dresses from them.[18]

Collections

The Collections section should include a wikitable in the style below. If a person has not contributed to collections, editors may forgo the inclusion of a Collections section. If a person has designed or worked for more than one brand, additional wikitables should be created and arranged vertically from earliest to latest.
