Neuterlab is a fashion brand founded in 2021 by Larrend Lacuesta and Karl Leuterio. Based in Greater Brisbane, Australia, it is known for drawing inspiration from its fascination with futuristic motifs, gender neutral silhouettes, and conceptual art forms.
Background
The brand's overall mission is to support emerging creatives through collaborations. They produce small, limited quantities in order to adhere to the brand's sustainable values. With the brand moving away from using 100% polyester and focusing on working with higher quality textiles.
By creating pieces timeless pieces that can stylistically last for a long time and avoiding trend-driven focus, Neuterlab's focus on sustainability is shown through its intentions. Neuterlab also creates its own art pieces.[1]
History
Throughout Lacuesta's life, he had always pursued creativity in many forms. From self-portraits to visual storytelling. He went from publishing his own magazine, Ninthsheep, to start his own brand in 2021, which reflected his own personal style. The brand gets its name from a fusion of two ideas: "Neuter," as in neutral, non-binary, stripped of gendered expectations; and “lab,” as in experimentation. It’s a space where clothing isn’t confined by rules, rather expressing freely. The name reflects their ethos: genderless, conceptual, and quietly defiant.
The brand had a multidisciplinary launch in November 2023, and has in 2025 focused on working with higher-quality textiles and collaborating with other creatives.[1] In September 2025, the brand launched a collaboration with fellow Australian designer, Isabella Charles.[2]
Style
Visually, Neuterlab is monochromatic, androgynous, and grunge-inflected with elegance. They work with a manufacturer in China who shares their commitment to small-batch production. They prefer working with cotton, rayon, viscose, mohair, and wool. Their core values are intentionality and emotional clarity.[1]
Themes
The message behind Neuterlab’s collections is simple: self-expression without suppression.
They want people to feel like they’re wearing something that reflects their inner world and not just their outer appearance. There’s a quiet rebellion in every piece and refusal to conform to trend and expectation.
Neuterlab is not trying to reinvent themselves with every release, but rather refine, and expand through the same core philosophy.[1]
Motifs
Neuterlab does not use a lot of loose visual motifs. Like many brands, they use zippers and buckles. But the main motif is absent, whilst simultaneously only using black in their garments. Thus putting all the emphasis and focus on the silhouettes and textures, rather than graphics or similar.[1]
Notable Products

List and describe iconic or bestselling products. Highlight pieces that define the brand’s legacy or reputation.
Neuterlabs bestselling piece is the "Flux Pants". It’s made from 100% rayon and features a wide, flowing silhouette that mimics a long skirt, creating an androgynous elegant shape. The idea was to create a skirt, that wasn't a skirt.
Lacuesta's favourite piece however, was the Tar Top. It was a was a one-off piece where Lacuesta needed to use a mannequin bust as the mould. He later used expanding foam, painted it all black with acrylic paint, carved the shape with a kitchen knife and added straps, and lastly fabric lining inside of it to make it wearable.
The piece took days to try, spraying it multiple times with expanding foam and painting multiple more layers in order to complete the piece.[1]
Collections
Neuterlab operates with two different type of collection formats rather than making huge collections.

Mainline Collection – this is timeless and ongoing with limited batches. The collections are not following the traditional seasonal formats of Spring/Summer and Autumn/Winter, but rather making pieces intuitively one by one. It’s a living archive that reflects that brand’s DNA: monochromatic, androgynous, experimental, quiet rebellion with a touch of elegance.
One-off series: These are unique pieces that Lacuesta creates himself or in collaboration with other Brisbane-based designers. They’re spontaneous, instinctive, and often born from a single vision or mood. Each one-off is a moment captured in fabric and singular vision.[1]
