Meta Campania Collective is a fashion brand founded in 2020 by Jon Strassburg and Heiko Keinath. Based in Paris, France, it is known for its approach of making clothes for the everyday living of an artist.
Background
Meta Campania Collective is a brand for the artist as they, according to Strassburg, are the best dressed people on the planet.
“The inspiration is the artist. We love the mindset of an artist; the freedom and the lack of compromise – and obviously also the way artists dress is a great inspiration… It’s always very nonchalant, it always underlines the personality without ever overshadowing. And they never like branding, they always like great quality.” said Strassburg.[1]
The brand prides itself in its usage of organic materials and the countries which they are produced such as the UK, Japan, and Italy.
History
Meta Campania Collective was originally founded in warm landscapes of Southern Italy, by Jon Strassburg.[2] The word Meta struck him as a great brand name whilst he was on holiday in Amalfi, when he drove through a town of the same name.[3]
“I passed this beautiful Italian ’60s street sign and fell completely in love with the name. Campania is there because of the region and collective because of the inspiration behind the whole venture.” he said.[4]
He later had a "now-or-never" moment, he registered a company and copyright before approaching his friends Heiko Keinath and Constanze Walcher to complete the founding team of his newly established brand.[5]
Strassburg had stints working at Bottega Veneta and Burberry, before he left to co-found the brand.[6] The brand was founded on the basis that Strassburg and his friends wanted to create clothes that suited their needs, which they couldn't find anywhere else, and thus, Meta Campania Collective was born. The idea was to create a perfect uniform, easy and comfortable clothing that could be worn for any occasion.[7]
The brand's first collection was named 'Season 01' and featured "The artist uniform"— a workwear jacket with drawstring trousers (and) shorts—centred the collection. The pieces were crafted by using: dry Japanese cotton, lightweight organic cotton, open-weave hemp wool, as well as a luxurious lamb suede.[8] The artist uniform has since become a stalwart in their collections.
Style
The brand's aesthetic is that of simplicity and elegance merged into one, the clothes are artisanal in order to fit an artists every day need for comfort. "Art and artists is the key inspiration in everything we do," said Strassburg.[9]
