Larrend Lacuesta, born 21 May 1993 in the Philippines, is a Filipino-Australian fashion designer. He's the co-owner and co-founder of Australian fashion label, Neuterlab.

Early Life

Larrend Lacuesta was born in the Philippines and moved to Australia at the age of 16. He started his creative journey with photography and short-film making at the same age, with his photography mainly focusing on self portraits. He honed his craft for over a decade and used his photography as a way of exploring his identity.

He met his current partner, Karl Leuterio, who is a fashion designer, in 2013 and asked him to make something conceptual for Lacuesta to photograph. Leuterio and the move to Australia were the initial influences in Lacuesta's own personal style development. With the pair gravitating towards more monochrome and androgynous silhouettes which can be reflected in their work.[1]

Career

Lacuesta studied business and graduated in 2021 from Griffith University. His professional background is in Human Resources.

He also released three self-published magazines called Ninthsheep, which featured nostalgic travel photos, self-portraits and conceptual fashion styling with his partner. The visual storytelling that he conveyed later naturally transitioned into fashion design with his brand Neuterlab being an extension of it.

Lacuesta initially started sketching clothes that he'd like to wear, with designs of pieces he couldn't find anywhere else. This became the driving force for his decision to create his own brand, Neuterlab. Lacuesta wanted to create his own world where the clothes would reflect his values.[1]

Style

Techniques

Lacuesta's process is based on intuition, and not the regular research or patternmaking. The ideas and techniques come from watching or touching things that he likes, before acquiring material which has a similar feel to it. Some of his one-off pieces were made solely on instinct with him cutting fabrics, and sewing, without taking measurements or markings.[1]

Themes

Lacuesta focuses a lot on quiet rebellion. With all his work being in monochromatic colours, and his art work consisting of wires and sharp pins. He consistently creates pieces that refuse to conform to trends and modern society's expectations.[2]

Collections

The brand's November 2023 nameless collection, featured several framed art pieces in order to enhance the collection's overall mood. With a heavy focus on texture, the art pieces featured rabbit furs, wires, leather strings, scarred cowhide leather, and sharp pins. The art pieces were uncovered so people attending the launch event could touch the pieces and get a more authentic experience.[1]
