Jan-Jan Van Essche (born 1980), is a Belgian fashion designer. He's the owner and founder of his namesake brand, Jan-Jan Van Essche. [1]

Early Life

Van Essche was born and raised in Antwerp, Belgium.

He worked in a Dries van Noten at the age of 16.[2]

Van Essche attended the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, which he graduated from in 2003. In the second year, students at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts have to create a replica of a historical silhouette. Van Essche opted for a Madeleine Vionnet design from the 1920's.[3]

During his time at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, he managed to win several accolades, including the Belgian Fashion Awards 2023 Jury Prize. He also received the prestigious Dries Van Noten award, and FFI prize.[1]

Career

Van Essche set up his namesake brand in 2010 from Atelier Solarshop, which is a boutique that he runs with his partner.[4] His first collection was called "YUKKURI" which is Japanese for "take it easy" or "slow" which he released in 2010.[1]

Style

Techniques

Van Essche focuses a lot on "openness in design" which translates into free flowing and loose garments, prioritising comfort above everything else. In an interview with 1granary, he states:

"Walking in shoes that are a size too small, or having a blazer which is cut too sharp under the arms… These kinds of things really bother me every second of the day when I feel it, so I cannot imagine making things that do that somehow. I felt this openness and comfort in more ethnical and folkloric kinds of shapes, but also in the Vionnet structure I mentioned earlier."[5]

Themes

His first collection, titled "YUKKURI", became his intrinsic and conceptual approach as a designer for contemporary clothing. Van Essche sees the collective human culture as a source of inspiration when he creates new clothing. Every new design is an attempt to open up new perspectives and dare to engage in contradictory dialogues. With each collection, traditional patterns from different ethnic-cultural backgrounds are carefully studied and then interpreted in the individual language of Van Essche.[6]

Van Essche takes inspiration from Japanese traditional clothing, whilst also mentioning Yohji Yamamoto, Comme des Garçons (Rei Kawakubo), and Issey Miyake.[7][8]

Collections

Van Essche has currently designed and created 15 collections for his namesake label, with the first one released on June 13th in 2010.
